Another day in this stupid life I’m cursed with, I thought as I dragged myself out of bed getting ready for high school. I passed my silent mother in the kitchen, who still doesn’t speak since the incident. The bus pulled up, and I found a seat in the back, away from everyone.
Through the halls I passed by invisible, heading to my locker where a small group of popular kids stood. I overheard them talking about the old warehouse rumor.
“Come on, stop being a coward! They say if you enter the building you can hear the flames still roaring where those two teens died last year. They say they’re trapped,” The main girl, Tracey, explained.
“It’s just a stupid rumor to scare kids from going there,” Tracey’s guy friend said.
“So? I wanna go. I don’t care who died, I just wanna party with some ghosts,” She replied.
“Do you have any respect for the dead?!” I slammed my locker shut hearing enough, but quickly quieted down.
“Excuse me? Isn’t it little-whatever-your-name-is? You got something to say to us?” Tracey stepped up to me with her broad size intimidating my small stature.
“It’s Cassidy, and I-I’m j-just saying ghosts aren’t real,” I lied as she trapped me against my locker. She smiled making me nervous.
“Then how about you come with us? Prove us wrong. After school, meet us in the parking lot or else,” She glared at me. The bell finally rang giving me the chance to escape.
The day seemed to last forever before the clock struck three. Was I really going with them? Back to that place? I had no choice if I didn’t want to get tortured all year. I hated them, I hated this school, and I hated my life. “Brother, I miss you…,” I whispered as I headed to the parking lot.
The group was already waiting. Tracey smiled wickedly as she spotted me, waving me over, and making me get into the back seat with her female friend, as her guy friend took the front passenger seat.
The car ride lasted an hour as we pulled in to a deserted parking lot overrun by weeds, and where a three-story blackened building stood with busted windows. Ash clung to the bottoms of our shoes as we entered the unstable building.
“Hello?!” Tracey’s voice echoed off the large room.
“They died in this room. Police reported it was arson due to being drunk,” the guy explained, “That must’ve been a fun night. Too bad the party had to end. I want to die drunk and banging a girl.”
“Shut up! That’s not how it happened! He would never do that.” I silenced myself before I said anything else. The group glared at me.
“Then how did it happen? Inform us.” The guy stepped closer making me step back.
“I-I don’t know. He-he wasn’t’ the type to drink,” I said.
“He was drenched in it, girl. Are you stupid? You don’t take alcohol to an abandoned place if you’re not going to drink it,” Tracey said as she pulled out a lighter. “They probably were smoking up too. That party must’ve been great if they were that doped and drunk to set themselves on fire.” She laughed as she lit the lighter taunting the flame, then pulling out a bottle of booze handing it to her friends. “I wonder how wasted we can get? Come out, ghosts! Let’s party!”
“Shut up! David never drank in his life! He was the best person ever! Stop insulting his name, you bitch!” I couldn’t stop my rage and tackled Tracey to the floor. The others pulled me off. Tracey rose to her feet ready to attack until noticing a fire began to burn from the fallen lighter.
“Oh shit!” The guy tried stomping on the small flame, but Tracey halted him.
“Stop, let little Cassidy be re-united with her ghosts since she loves them so much.” Tracey smiled, picking up the lighter, and hurling it towards me where it catches fire trapping me. The group fled. I stared in fear at the burning flames, but welcomed it at the same time. I coughed as smoke entered my lungs. I’m going to die here, aren’t I? My vision began to blur. Finally, I can be with you, David. Take me away from this awful place.
“Cassie…” A male voice caught my attention from the flames “Hold on for your life,”
“Huh? W-why?” I spoke barely a whisper.
“Hold on for your life, Cassie,” It was David, his figure fading in and out as the flames flickered violently. “Get out alive as you still can.”
“David! Please don’t leave, I need you! I want to be with you…” I reached out, but the flames burned me. Another figure, a girl, appeared.
“Hold on for your life,” It was Jade.
“I don’t understand!” I yelled, using the wall behind me as support trying not to faint. A vision started to unfold in front of me of David and Jade arguing.
“You can’t break up with me! I love you!” she shouted.
“It’s too late, Jade. I had enough of your bad influence. They were all right about you, and I won’t have you messing up my life.” David turned to leave, but was struck down by a beer bottle to his head. He moaned on the floor.
“We will be together forever! You will see, my love. Death shall be our escape.” Jade lit a flame setting the area around them on fire, allowing them both to die trapped inside. The vision was over as I awoke outside confused. David and Jade appeared over me as the building crumbles to the ground.
“No time for goodbyes. I can’t stay for too long for I’ll be burning on the inside. I can only hope I’ll make it to the other side. Tell mother the truth, and hold on to your life, Cassie. You never know who will steal it away,” He said as he faded away.
“It’s hard to imagine but one day you’ll end up like me. Death isn’t as great as it seems to be. Hold on to your life, or be burning on the inside. Get out alive while you still can.” She said as she too faded away.
I watched the flames dance upon the ruins in a trance. “Jade killed him? I knew the rumors were lies, and she was a psycho. For you brother, I’ll hold on to life. Goodbye, please watch over me like you did when you were alive.” I cried knowing now he’s free.
I know this isn't that great but it was only my second try at Flash fiction. I got the plotline thinking of a favorite song of mine, Get Out Alive by Three Days Grace, and this story just popped into my head. I used the lyrics as the words at the end because it sounded cool in my head to do that. I probably failed but least I tried. I suck at flash fiction lol.

Enjoy =)
